HOW WE MET AND PROSPERED DECEMBER 2019: DAVID CANE, SUNDIAL TAX AND FINANCE LTD.

Thanks for speaking with us today. Would you mind telling us about you and your organisation?

I am a chartered accountant and after running an accounting practice for 35 years, I decided that I needed a change. So I sold the practice and set up Sundial Tax & Finance Ltd., to assist business owners in the SME market to prepare and value their companies for sale. This extended to valuations for clients wishing to purchase a company/business, generational sales, valuations to agree with HMRC for tax purposes, particularly capital gains tax and inheritance tax. I am also engaged as a forensic accountant or an expert witness in shareholder disputes and divorce settlements where either or both parties own a private company.

I work as a consultant and have profitable professional connections with lawyers, sale brokers (one of whom is a member of Business Junction) and a licenced business credit brokers(also a member of Business Junction). In short I prepare and value the company, the sale broker finds a buyer and the credit broker arranges any necessary finance to complete the deal.

What sets you apart in your business sector?

Most small and medium sized firms of accountants and lawyers with clients in the SME market do not have the expertise to advise and value on the sale of a company. Furthermore the company owner has less of an idea of selling his company, since his main occupation has been running it and not selling it! Secondly, where shareholder/directors wish to go their separate ways, an independent valuation of the company can eliminate the suspicions and emotional concerns of the parties involved, particularly if the accountants or auditors are more closely associated with some of the board members.

How long have you been a member of Business Junction and what first attracted you to the network?

I have been a member for 5 years and was attracted to the idea of a such a varied selection of weekly venues for the events and the large number of contacts attending each event as Business Juction events are always very well attended.

Have you made any good connections through the network and could you share some examples with us?

I have made good connections with a number of lawyer firms with good post meeting correspondence establishing where collaboration could work.  Specifically, I have recently initiated the completion of a company sale through a sale broker, David Winn-Morgan of South Eastern Business  Brokers Ltd, who is a member of Business Junction.

Has Business Junction helped your business in any other ways?

The meeting of business people of the same and different disciplines has stimulated my interest and shaped how I can network in a more effective manner.

What’s been your favourite event to date?

The annual breakfast onboard HQS Wellington is the best event for me as a venue and the structure of the meeting allows for maximum interaction between the 55 companies that attend these excellent monthly breakfast meetings.

Do you have a networking tip to share?

Yes. Do not prejudge the event from the attendee list, as you can always be agreeably surprised.

How would you describe Business Junction in one word?

Enjoyable!

What would you say to our non-member guests about Business Junction and our networking events?

To give it a go is the only way to find out whether you like it or not.
